Lucent BioSciences Starts Commercial Manufacturing

Lucent BioSciences is excited to announce that it has started the commercial manufacturing of its micronutrient fertilizer Soileos

Vancouver, BC – Lucent BioSciences, Inc. (Lucent Bio) is on a mission to develop solutions to mitigate the climate impact on global food security and human health. Lucent Bio has developed a sustainable micronutrient fertilizer called Soileos

Lucent Bio’s patented technology upcycles low value sources of cellulose such as lentil, pea, wheat or oat hulls into a natural delivery agent for micronutrients. Research has shown that Soileos increases crop yields, is carbon-neutral, has a low salt index and empowers farmers to grow better crops at the same time as improving soil health and sequestering carbon.

Over the last 18 months and with support from Protein Industries Canada (PIC), AGT Foods, and grants from Innovate BC, the BC Agritech program and the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program, Lucent Bio was able to:

  • Increase production from benchtop to commercial manufacturing
  • Eliminate waste water and develop a method of clean manufacturing that is waste-less
  • Extensively test our products in over 50 small plot trials utilizing  independent research organizations and universities as well as with 40 farms on over 1,000 acres of land with multiple crops.

“Lucent Bio’s Soileos is a true sustainability success story for Canada’s plant-based food, feed and ingredients ecosystem,” Protein Industries Canada CEO Bill Greuel said. “Together with AGT Food and Ingredients, Lucent Bio has found a way to utilize every part of a pulse seed, from protein to fibre. And they’ve done so in a way that will benefit the health of our soils while helping farmers meet their yield goals.”

“As of today, Lucent Bio has achieved a major milestone by starting commercial manufacturing, bringing Soileos to the market for the upcoming 2022 growing season in partnership with 4 distributors in North America”, said Lucent Bio’s CEO Michael Riedijk,” Exponential scale up is anticipated for the following years.”
